Ingredients

Just a handful of ingredients come together in this recipe.

  • Bread: A good quality bread sets this sandwich over the edge. I love to use a baguette, however sourdough, ciabatta or your favorite rolls all work well here.
  • Turkey: Oven roasted turkey breast. You can use deli meat or leftover turkey slices.
  • Mozzarella: Sliced mozzarella cheese. If you don’t like mozzarella, try Swiss cheese or provolone.
  • Pesto: Basil pesto, store-bought or homemade. Try this Spinach Basil Pesto or Almond Basil Pesto.
  • Lettuce: Crispy leaf lettuce or arugula.
  • Tomato: A fresh vine ripened tomato, sliced.

Variations

  • Make it with a different bread. Ciabatta, sourdough or your favorite rolls would all work great for this sandwich. You can even make it healthier with whole wheat or multi grain bread. For gluten-free, just be sure to use gluten-free bread.
  • Add more toppings. Sun dried tomatoes or roasted red peppers would add some extra flavor.
  • Swap out the turkey for chicken. If you don’t have turkey, you could use sliced chicken from the deli or even carved rotisserie chicken slices.
  • Use leftover Thanksgiving turkey! If you’re not sure what to do with leftover thanksgiving turkey, this is a delicious sandwich to make with it.
  • Toast the bread or make it into a panini. Toasting the bread will give it some great texture or make it into a panini for a warm sandwich with melty cheese.

Yes! You can make a turkey sandwich ahead of time. If you are using tomato or any other “wet” ingredient, be sure it doesn’t directly touch the bread to prevent it from getting soggy. Consider putting a layer of lettuce between the tomato and bread.
