These Honey Wheat Dinner Rolls are the perfect side to just about any meal. They're light, fluffy, and full of flavor. How can you resist a roll served warm, right out of the oven? Especially if you're serving them with some cinnamon butter!
Ingredients
Just a few simple ingredients come together to create these delightfully soft Honey Wheat Dinner Rolls.
Milk: This is the liquid base for the dough. 1% or 2% milk work great in this recipe, however you could also use a plant based milk if you prefer.
Honey: To sweeten the rolls. Honey compliments the whole wheat flour. You could substitute granulated sugar or pure maple syrup instead, but they will alter the flavor slightly.
Unsalted Butter: Both for inside the dough and to brush over the rolls before they go into the oven and just after they come out.
Flour: Whole Wheat Flour and All-Purpose Flour for the perfect texture. I like King Arthur Baking Company.
Yeast: One packet (or 2 ¼ teaspoons) of Instant Yeast.
Salt: Fine sea salt to round out the flavors.
Egg: Just one large egg to create tender, soft rolls.

Step-By-Step Instructions
These whole wheat buns are easy to make by hand!
- Warm the liquid. Add the milk, honey, and 2 tablespoons butter to a small saucepan. Heat over low heat, stirring occasionally, until butter is melted and mixture reaches 110°F. Set aside.
- Mix the dry ingredients. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour, fine sea salt, and instant yeast.
- Form the dough and knead. Add the egg and warm liquid mixture to the dry ingredient mix. Using a silicone spatula, stir until a dough begins to form. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 6-8 minutes, adding more flour if dough is too sticky. (Add just 1-2 tablespoons at a time as needed. Do not add too much flour). Knead until dough is slightly tacky but smooth. Form the dough into a ball.
- Let the dough rise. Place the ball of dough into a large greased bowl and cover with a clean towel or plastic wrap. Let the dough rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until it's doubled in size.
- Shape the rolls. Gently deflate the dough and divide into 15 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and place in a greased 9 x 13-inch baking dish. You should be able to fit 3 in a row, making 5 rows.
- Second rise. Cover the baking dish with a clean towel or plastic wrap. Put it in a warm place and let rise for about 45 minutes. When it's almost done rising, preheat the oven to 375°F. Melt 1 tablespoon of butter.
- Bake. Brush the tops of the buns with half of the melted butter. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until golden and cooked through.
- Serve. Brush the tops with the other half of the melted butter while they are still warm. Serve warm and enjoy!

Serving Suggestions
Though these rolls are good at room temperature, they're best served warm straight from the oven.
- Serve them with butter, jam, or this Whipped Cinnamon Butter with Honey.
- Keep them warm by placing them in a bowl and covering with a clean towel.
- These Honey Wheat Dinner Rolls are the perfect side for just about any meal. Serve with classic comfort foods like Turkey Meatloaf with Zucchini, chilis or soups like Italian Wedding Soup with Turkey Meatballs, or even with holiday meals like this Maple Dijon Turkey Breast Tenderloins.
- My absolute favorite way to enjoy these leftover, is by cutting them in half, toasting them and making them into breakfast sliders. Top them with a slice of cheese, an over medium egg, and a slice of prosciutto.

Notes
You want the liquid mixture to reach 110°F to activate the yeast. If you don't have a kitchen thermometer, you can check the mixture to make sure it's warm to the touch, but not hot.
