Description

These Honey Wheat Dinner Rolls are the perfect side to just about any meal. They're light, fluffy, and full of flavor. How can you resist a roll served warm, right out of the oven? Especially if you're serving them with a pat of cinnamon butter!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided
  • 2 1/4 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons instant yeast
  • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1 large egg

Instructions

  1. Warm the liquid. Add the milk, honey, and 3 tablespoons butter to a small saucepan. Heat over low heat, stirring occasionally, until butter is melted and mixture reaches 110°F. Set aside.
  2. Mix the dry ingredients. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour, fine sea salt, and instant yeast.
  3. Form the dough and knead. Add the egg and warm liquid mixture to the dry ingredient mix. Using a silicone spatula, stir until a dough begins to form. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 6-8 minutes, adding more flour if dough is too sticky. (Add just 1-2 tablespoons at a time as needed. Do not add too much flour). Knead until dough is slightly tacky but smooth. Form the dough into a ball.
  4. Let the dough rise. Place the ball of dough into a large greased bowl and cover with a clean towel or plastic wrap. Let the dough rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until it's doubled in size.
  5. Shape the rolls. Gently deflate the dough and divide into 15 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and place in a greased 9 x 13-inch baking dish. You should be able to fit 3 in a row, making 5 rows.
  6. Second rise. Cover the baking dish with a clean towel or plastic wrap. Put it in a warm place and let rise for about 45 minutes. When it's almost done rising, preheat the oven to 375°F. Melt 1 tablespoon of butter.
  7. Bake. Brush the tops of the buns with half of the melted butter. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until golden and cooked through.
  8. Serve. Brush the tops with the other half of the melted butter while they are still warm. Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

You want the liquid mixture to reach 110°F to activate the yeast. If you don't have a kitchen thermometer, you can check the mixture to make sure it's warm to the touch, but not hot.
