Ingredients
This recipe uses simple ingredients that you probably already have in your kitchen.
- Pizza Dough: Homemade pizza dough ingredients are flour, sugar, salt, instant yeast, olive oil, and warm water. You could also use a store-bought 22 ounce pizza dough.
- Butter: Half a stick of melted butter to mix with the garlic and herbs to brush over the knots.
- Garlic: What would garlic knots be without the garlic! You need 3 cloves of minced garlic.
- Herbs: Use dried herbs in this recipe. Parsley, basil, and oregano.
- Salt: Sea salt is best for the topping.
- Cheese: Top with grated parmesan cheese.

Step-By-Step Instructions
Though these Parmesan Garlic Knots do take a while to make if you're making homemade pizza dough, most of it is hands-off time while the dough rises.
Make The Pizza Dough
- Prepare the dough. In a large mixing bowl whisk together the flour, sugar, salt and yeast. Add warm water and olive oil. Be sure your water is between 100° and 110°. This is the best temperature to activate the yeast. It should feel warm to the touch, but not hot. Using a silicone spatula or wooden spoon, mix together until it starts to form a dough. Turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and knead by hand for 7-10 minutes until it forms a smooth, soft dough.
- Let the dough rise. Place the dough in a lightly greased large bowl (olive oil is best). Cover with a clean damp towel or plastic wrap. Let the homemade pizza dough rise for an hour or so, until doubled in size.
- Deflate the dough.Turn out the dough onto a lightly floured surface and deflate the dough. Watch this video from King Arthur Baking for my favorite way to deflate it. Once deflated, form it into a ball.
If using store-bought pizza dough: Lightly grease a large bowl with olive oil. Place the dough in it and cover with a damp towel or plastic wrap until it comes to room temperature, about 1-2 hours.
Make the Parmesan Garlic Knots
- Form the knots. Using a sharp knife, cut the dough into 16 even-sized pieces. You can either stretch the pizza dough into a rectangle that's 16 inches long and cut into 16 strips, or just cut the dough ball into quarters, then quarter each of those pieces. Stretch and roll each piece into an 8 inch rope. This can sometimes be tricky, since the dough likes to bounce back. If you are getting a lot of bounce back, just put the piece down for a minute to let it rest. Tie each rope into a knot, then tuck the ends in.
- Second rise. Place the knots on large parchment lined baking sheet. Cover with a damp towel and let rise for 45 minutes until the knots are slightly puffy.
- Prepare the topping and bake. Towards the end of the second rise, preheat the oven to 400°. In a small bowl, stir together the melted butter, garlic, parsley, basil, and oregano. Season with sea salt. Brush the knots with half of the garlic herb butter. Set aside the other half for after baking. Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden.
- Serve. Remove the parmesan garlic knots from the oven and brush with the remaining garlic herb butter. Top with parmesan cheese and serve warm.
