I love making homemade French onion dip with Greek yogurt and caramelized onions. It tastes so much fresher and lighter than store-bought dips. It's much healthier than using those packets of French onion soup mix with sour cream, since it doesn't contain all those preservatives.

Greek Yogurt as a Substitute for Sour Cream
I typically use Greek yogurt as a substitute for sour cream in many recipes, from baking to dips. Greek Yogurt is generally lower in calories and fat and higher in protein than sour cream.
You can substitute at a 1:1 ratio in many recipes since the textures are very similar. Greek yogurt is tangier than sour cream, so you may need to adjust the flavoring amounts accordingly, depending on what you are making.
Ingredients

- Olive Oil: Extra virgin olive oil to sauté the onions. You can substitute for your preferred neutral cooking oil, like avocado oil. Butter or ghee are also great substitutes.
- Onion: A diced medium yellow onion. You could swap this out for a white onion.
- Garlic: One clove of minced garlic. Fresh garlic gives a sweeter, subtle flavor compared to garlic powder, so fresh is a must!
- Greek Yogurt: 0% fat plain Greek yogurt. I like Fage for it's extra thick and creamy texture. Full-fat greek yogurt would also work great in this recipe.
- Paprika: For added flavor.
- Worcestershire Sauce: For some added savory flavor. Be sure to read the label to ensure it fits your dietary restrictions because some include anchovy and gluten.
- Salt: Sea salt to round out all the flavors.

How to Make French Onion Dip with Greek Yogurt
- Heat the olive oil in a small skillet over medium-low heat. Add the diced onion and cook, stirring occasionally, for 20-25 minutes until the onions become golden. You want them to begin to caramelize. Reduce the heat to low if needed. Add the minced garlic and cook for 30 more seconds, until fragrant. Remove from heat and set aside to cool.

- Once the onions are cooled, stir together the Greek yogurt, paprika, Worcestershire sauce, sea salt, and onion mixture in a bowl.
- Serve with your favorite chips or veggies for dipping.

Expert Tip: If your onions are drying out or sticking to the pan, add a splash or two of water. Give it a good stir to deglaze the pan.
Variations
- Top it with fresh herbs. Chopped parsley or chives will add a pop of color and flavor.
- Make it less tangy. Swap out a few spoonfuls of the Greek yogurt for mayo to make it less tangy and slightly more creamy.
- Be sure it's gluten-free. Sometimes Worcestershire sauce contains gluten, so check the label to ensure it is gluten-free. Serve it with gluten-free dipping options.
- Make it vegetarian. Worcestershire sauce can also contain anchovy. Read the label to make sure it does not if you want to make it vegetarian. I love Whole Foods 365 brand Worcestershire Sauce, which does not have anchovies.
Serving Suggestions
Greek Yogurt French Onion Dip is a delicious party appetizer. It's great for holidays, tailgating, your next game-day football get-together, BBQ, or cookout.
My favorite way to serve it is as a chip dip with potato chips. It's also great with pita chips, pretzels, crackers or veggies. Great options are carrot sticks, celery sticks, broccoli florets, and sliced bell peppers.

Make Ahead and Storage
Make Ahead: This dip is great for making ahead since it keeps well in the refrigerator. You can even make it up to a few days in advance.
To Store: Refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Give it a good stir before serving.
To Freeze: I do not recommend freezing Greek yogurt onion dip. The yogurt can separate when thawing, which will change the consistency.
